Karma Metrix Assessment

An innovative service that measures the energy efficiency and CO2e emissions of website pages. The service includes:

  • 1 or more spot measurements with the Karma Metrix algorithm
  • delivery of a report with the estimated amount of CO2e emitted by the website pages
  • the percentage difference compared to the world median (a value calculated by Karma Metrix considering emissions from a global sample of millions of web pages).
  • Karma Metrix Seal

The amount of CO2e emitted is calculated using a proprietary algorithm applied to the website page views and compared to the CO2e produced by the median web page for the same number of visits.

Based on available data, the assessment can be performed on the Desktop and/or Mobile version of the website pages. If the site being measured is viewable in mobile version, the assessment will examine the elements and behavior of the page displayed in Desktop version.

The service does not include verification of the accuracy of web analytics metrics provided by the client. The client is responsible for providing correct page views and enabling page requests by the Karma Metrix bot.

Karma Metrix® Seal

Digital badge that attests to the start and maintenance of a measurement and improvement path of the eco-sustainability of the site.

The seal can be used and published, without geographical limits and without additional costs for the client, on:

  • website
  • email
  • social media
  • Sustainability balance sheet / non-financial statement
  • Press releases and other external communications
  • Internal communication

The temporal validity of the seal is 1 year from the start date of the Karma Metrix Assessment; to maintain the seal, the client must repeat the Karma Metrix Assessment measurement at each expiration. The seal cannot be modified and must be removed from all digital materials after expiration.

Website CO2 emissions

The calculated CO2e emissions refer to the emissions generated by the pageviews of the Desktop and Smartphone sample pages over a certain period of time, typically the calendar year or the year ending on the start date of the Karma Metrix Assessment service.

Energy mix

is the set of primary energy sources (e.g. oil, coal, nuclear, renewables) used by a geographical area for the production of electricity. Depending on the distribution and type of primary sources used, the electricity resulting from the reference energy mix will have different degrees of sustainability.

As of January 2023, the energy mixes used by the Karma Metrix algorithm are:

  • Worldwide energy mix, with coal as the main primary energy source and therefore with a greater environmental impact
  • European energy mix, more eco-sustainable since it has a lower coal share and higher shares of renewable and nuclear sources

The Karma Metrix algorithm is constantly evolving and the above may have changed in the meantime.
