Carbon offsetting is a concept that involves compensating for carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gas emissions by an entity through activities that reduce or avoid the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. For example, the entity could fund energy efficiency or renewable energy projects, or invest in projects that help preserve forests, which are important as they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Carbon offsetting is often used as a way for companies and organizations to offset their emissions voluntarily. However, carbon offsetting does not replace the need for actually reducing emissions systemically, and should not be used as an excuse for not making significant changes to business practices.
