Methane is a colorless, odorless, and flammable gas composed of one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms. It is the main component of natural gas and is used as a source of energy for electricity production, heating, and cooking. Methane is also a potent greenhouse gas, with a global warming potential that is about twenty times greater than that of carbon dioxide over a fifty-year time frame. The release of methane from human activities, such as natural gas extraction and fossil fuel production, is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions and contributes to the greenhouse effect and climate change.
