The World Environment Day is an annual event celebrated on June 5th of each year. It was established by the United Nations in 1972 during the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, Sweden. This day provides an opportunity to raise public awareness and promote global actions for environmental protection. It has been celebrated every year on June 5th since 1974 with the slogan “Only One Earth.”

The importance of World Environment Day lies in the fact that it provides a platform to highlight the environmental challenges we face as a planet and promote concrete commitments for safeguarding the environment. This includes disseminating information on environmental issues, educating about sustainable solutions, encouraging active participation of individuals, and supporting policies and actions that foster sustainable development.

The day also offers an opportunity to reflect on the consequences of our actions on the environment and the importance of adopting responsible behaviors at the individual, collective, and institutional levels. Furthermore, it promotes collaboration among governments, non-governmental organizations, businesses, and citizens to address global environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and sustainable resource management.

World Environment Day plays a crucial role in promoting greater awareness and action towards environmental conservation, aiming to ensure a sustainable future for present and future generations.

In the past two years, we have contributed by raising awareness about the topic of digital sustainability, particularly by conducting research that investigates the impact of American tech giants. The research is called “ESG Big Tech Observatory.”
